GONTEN APPENZELL
A landscape shaped by tradition and renewal
In the idyllic surroundings of Gonten, in the heart of Appenzell Innerrhoden, a remarkable development is taking shape. Between 2023 and 2026, seven buildings are being renovated and newly constructed, forming a harmonious ensemble where heritage, hospitality, and contemporary living come together. The project includes the renovation of the historic Bären and Löwen, alongside the creation of Haus Quell, Kronberg, Seealpsee, Himmelberg, and Altenalp.

Where tradition meets transformation
The development honours the characteristic architectural language of Appenzell while introducing a refined, modern sensibility. Renovating the Bären and Löwen — both long-established landmarks — required a careful balance between preservation and renewal. Their authentic charm remains intact, now complemented by state-of-the-art facilities and spacious wellness areas. Haus Quell, also part of the 5-star offering, extends this sense of luxury with expansive indoor and outdoor spa zones, embodying a contemporary interpretation of alpine wellbeing.
Timeless living in the Appenzell landscape
In addition to the hotel buildings, four new residential buildings provide generous apartments designed for serene living. Future residents benefit from unobstructed views, crafted materials, and the full suite of services offered by the adjacent hotels. The development’s architectural approach blends seamlessly into the natural surroundings, allowing the mountain landscape to guide the rhythm of the built environment. Soft, natural tones and traditional forms meet crisp contemporary detailing, resulting in a calm, understated aesthetic.

RIVIO — transition embodied in form
The RIVIO by Gensler series echoes the project’s architectural narrative of transition and refinement. Based on the shift from something lighter to something more solid, its flowing cutaways allow the thumb and fingers to engage naturally, offering a uniquely comfortable grip. Carved through the centre of its circular section, the handle inclines gently back to the whole, resulting in a form that feels both ergonomic and sculptural. Available with either a subtle curve or a crisp 90-degree angle, RIVIO enhances the interiors with a refined balance of elegance, tactility, and thoughtful design — a fitting complement to Appenzell’s craftsmanship-driven character.
