Sustainable door hardware refers to the use of eco-friendly materials and technologies in the manufacture of door components. This can include everything from door handles and locks to hinges and door closers. The goal is to create products that are environmentally friendly, energy-efficient, and durable.
How we create the best eco-friendly door hardware
Our journey towards sustainability began with a simple question: "How can we make our products more eco-friendly?" We knew that traditional door handle manufacturing methods were not the most environmentally friendly, and we wanted to find a way to change that. After conducting extensive research and working closely with industry experts, we developed our working and manufacturing method that not only reduces environmental impact, but also produced better products.
Our sustainable manufacturing process involves using recycled materials whenever possible, and utilizing energy-efficient production methods that minimize waste and reduce our carbon footprint. We take great care in selecting the materials we use in our products. In our production we follow a ‘smart use of materials’ policy. It means that we prioritize materials that are renewable, biodegradable and non-toxic. At least 70% of the stainless steel material we use for our products is high-quality recycled stainless steel (industrial scrap). Only 30% is virgin material, but with high-quality to guarantee durability. 98% of our products is recyclable at the end of their lifespan. Our products, crafted from brass, are composed entirely of 100% recycled materials and remain fully recyclable at the end of their lifespan. The materials we use are more durable than traditional hardware, which reduces the need for replacements and waste.
Sustainable finishes for door, furniture and window hardware
In addition to using sustainable materials in the manufacturing process, the finish of sustainable door hardware is also an important aspect of sustainable architectural hardware. Our sustainable finish process involves using non-toxic and low-impact finishing methods (Low-VOC), such as powder coating and PVD coating, to minimize the use of harmful chemicals and reduce waste. Powder coating, for example, uses an electrostatic process to apply a dry powder coating that is cured with heat, resulting in a durable and eco-friendly finish. Physical Vapor Deposition is a thin film coating process which improves the surface of the stainless steel base material (PVD). This coating is sustainable because they are applied using a vacuum deposition process that does not release harmful chemicals or create hazardous waste. Additionally, PVD coatings can improve the durability and lifespan of materials, reducing the need for frequent replacements and ultimately minimizing waste.
With this in mind, our commitment to sustainability doesn’t just affect to our production process. It refers to our entire working process. We also think carefully about composition of our collections. For example, in putting together the right finish or colour palette which ensure durability and longevity for all circumstances. When a door handle is frequently exposed to severe weather conditions, it is better to choose a finish with PVD coating.
